He thought it was gonna be a long, long time before he ever saw his life on the big screen, but Rocketman, a biopic focusing on the tumultuous 20 years of Elton John's rise from obscure, shy songwriter to glittering, larger-than-life stadium star, is hitting theaters May So far, the reception of Dexter Fletcher's biopic has been positive, including at Cannes, where the film had its premiere. But there's one opinion that counts most when it comes to the story of his life. What does Elton John think of Rocketman? Not only is John pleased the film finally came to fruition, he also thinks it's the version he truly wanted to be made. The winding yellow-brick road to getting the film made took well over a decade. It will be more of a fantasy — Moulin Rouge type of stuff. Obviously, it's not going to be your normal, run-of-the-mill film. My life's been so surreal, from buying a football club to God knows what.

In this exclusive article, Elton John writes about his extraordinary life and why he finally decided to give the Rocketman biopic the green light. I was in the cinema for about 15 minutes before I started crying. Not crying as in the occasional tear quietly trickling down my cheek: really sobbing, in that loud, unguarded, emotionally destroyed way that makes people turn around and look at you with alarmed expressions. I gave some suggestions, saw a few daily rushes, said yay or nay to some important decisions and met two or three times with Taron Egerton , who plays me. I figured it would be uncomfortable for everyone to have the person the film was about lurking around. But it fitted life in Pinner Hill Road perfectly. They gave every impression of hating each other. My dad was strict and remote and had a terrible temper; my mum was argumentative and prone to dark moods. When they were together, all I can remember are icy silences or screaming rows.

Elton John is not a nostalgist. He met Taupin Jamie Bell onscreen by chance after both answered an ad in a British music magazine. He splits his time among multiple homes with Furnish and their sons, ages 8 and 6. In separate phone interviews — Taupin, 69, from his home in California, and John from a tour stop in Copenhagen — the pair discussed putting their lives on film.
Rocketman is a biographical musical film based on the life of British musician Elton John. The film follows John in his early days in England as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music through his musical partnership with Taupin. The film is titled after John's song " Rocket Man ". The film had been in development since the s before it was announced in that Focus Features acquired the rights to the film and director Michael Gracey and actor Tom Hardy were set to direct and star in the project respectively. After Hardy and Gracey left the project following creative differences between Focus and John that halted an initial production start in fall , the project languished for several years until Paramount Pictures and New Republic Pictures took over as distributor in April , where Egerton and Fletcher signed on. Principal photography began in August and was completed later that year. John served as executive producer, while his husband David Furnish produced the film through their Rocket Pictures , alongside Matthew Vaughn 's Marv Films.
